Period underwear are a type of undergarment that are intended to be worn when having periods. They take the place of disposable pads and tampons. Some women prefer to wear period underwear during the lighter flow days and also using them as backup during heavier flow days.

How do period panties work

Period underwear are made to look and feel like regular underwear but with extra layers and special fabric on the crotch area in order to absorb menstrual blood flow. The absorbent layer can hold one to two tampons’ worth of flow, the moisture barrier helps to keep you comfortable, and another layer that is designed to prevent any staining or leakage.

Can you wear period underwear the whole day?

Wearing period underwear all day depends on what type of period you have and where you are at your cycle. These underwear are available in heavy, medium, or light flow versions. If you wear period underwear as extra protection on your heavy days together with a tampon or menstrual cup, it is easier to wear the underwear all day. On light days, you would only need one pair of underwear to last the whole day.

Caring For Period Underwear

These underwear can be washed, re-wear and then wash again. It is important to ensure that you follow the proper care routines because this will help make the period underwear last as long as they can. It is pretty easy to take care and wash them.  Do scroll ahead for some tips.

Step 1 – Soaking

Once you have removed your period underwear, rinse them in cold water to wash out any blood. Then gently rub the gusset of the underwear with your fingers until the water runs clear. Next, drop them in cold water to soak and rinse them.

Step 2 – Washing

If you are using a washing machine to wash the underwear, do place them in a washable mesh bag and wash on the delicate or gentle cycle.

Step 3 – Drying

Do not put the period underwear in the dryer. Instead, lay it flat or hang dry to help maintain the integrity of the fabric.

Step 4 – Treating Stains

Are you worried about stains or lingering smells? Period undies are designed to be resistant to stains and should not have a scent if cared for properly. However, you may soak them in vinegar mix with water prior to laundering.

Can The Period Underwear Be Washed By Hands?

Yes, you can hand wash them by hand if you want. Just remember to use a mild detergent and no fabric softener.

What Should You Do After Opening Your Period Underwear

Firstly, wash the underwear either by hand or put them in the washer before wearing them. This will reduce any residue left over from the manufacturing process. If you are using a washing machine, you may want to use water below 30 degrees Celsius and set it to delicate setting. Then lay the underwear flat to dry. It is better to avoid fabric softener or bleach on your underwear as this may compromise the integrity of the fabric or ruin your panties.

There is no need to dread laundry days as it is really easy to wash your period underwear. Just rinse, wash, and dry.
